Geekfest Dubai Mobile Edition - The food!

While it was truly very nice meeting and mingling with a load of smiling and friendly faces at Geekfest Dubai Mobile Edition a.k.a mass gathering of twitterati's, what was also of interest other then the Zombie movie or the informative talks and the cool mobile apps by local developers.. was obviously the food! Provided by the nice folks at LimeTree Cafe, it was surprisingly quite nice. I say surprisingly as I have heard a lot of varied opinions about LimeTree and shamefully have still not been there, so it was good to finally try a small variety of their food.

The banana cake and the vegi spring rolls with the mango inside were my favourite and judging by how quickly the plates were being emptied, its a safe bet to say most people there enjoyed the food too or was I too busy eating to not notice if it was just me cleaning up the plates?

Here's what you missed... anyone remember what the dish in the second picture was called?

Sarvana Bhavan - the only choice for South Indian food

A fellow UAE based foodie by the name of Devina Divecha a.k.a FooDee recently laid down the gauntlet by proclaiming on her site that if you wanted South Indian food in Dubai, the only place to go was some random place (added for dramatic effect, actually I've tried it and thought it was OK, but definitely not THE place) called Venus in Karama. While I love all kinds of food, the one thing that I truly consider myself of being an expert at (eating & cooking) is South Indian food.

So for me, the lover of all things South Indian, who has frequently gone out for idli's at 7 am - I naturally thought it was my duty to put her right. I immediately called her out on twitter on her preferred choice of South Indian eatery, and a foodie face/off challenge was laid out and accepted! The VadaWar battle will be coming to a FiA blog near you soon..

In the mean time, I bring you a few choice selections from my personal favourite; Sarvana Bhavan...

MealSnap: Possibly the coolest foodie app ever?

When it comes to the Blackberry v/s iPhone battle, I have always firmly been part of the BB camp. That was until recently when I found out about possibly the coolest iPhone App! Might possibly be because it is food related..

The way it works is simple, take a picture of your food (which we all do anyway right - or is it just me?) and et voila it tells you what you are eating and approximately how many calories it has!

Is it wrong to want an iPhone just for a single app? If you've tried it, let me know what you thought! I am curious to know if their database of 500,000 foods has many Arabic or Desi specialties in it.

Appa Kadai - Dubai's not so hidden treasure

When is a restaurant no longer classed as a hidden treasure?

Well you would think once it has won a few awards including Masala Magazine's Best Asian Restaurant 2 years running, that the secret would be out by then..

Still it amazes me how many people just walk past this gem of a restaurant in Dubai Marina without giving it as much as a second look, in fact I was guilty of it too.. maybe it has something to do with the lack luster decor? or maybe the lack of any decor at all other then the large neon sign on the outside? You can't let this put you off as "A.K" is all about the food. You would think a restaurant that has won multiple awards would have sky high prices and spot on service? Well you would be wrong, a meal for two will still set you back only 30-40 Dhs and their service is still sketchy as ever - good to know they haven't let their success go to their head as it were.

Shake Shack @ Mall of Emirates

The American chain Shake Shack will be opening its doors at the Mall of the Emirates tonight! They describe themselves as a modern roadside diner specialising in burgers, fries and shakes.

Yes I know it is yet another franchise, but we are truly excited about their burgers & milkshakes! Regarded by some very knowledgeable foodies as the nicest burger they've had, they also hold the Nr. 1 spot on foodspotting.com for most 'nommed' sighting, which is no small feat. Can't wait to try this place and report back!

BBQ Delight - all you can eat Pakistani goodness

What do you when you are REALLY in the mood to indulge? Hit up a all you can eat buffet of course! And should those taste buds be craving kebabs, well in that case.. you'd be hard pressed to find better then BBQ Delight! It's full of delicious kebab's, naans and sweets.

The best part? It's only 65 AED per person - I am told this is only for the JBR branch while the one in Bur Dubai is 55 AED if you feel like a drive.

Noodle House @ Burjuman revisited

Noodle House is one of those restaurants that you have probably come across, be it at the Emirates Towers or the Madinat. With 5 different locations in the city, Noodle House's oriental  fusion offering's aren't overly complicated or inspiring but their constantly updating menu does mean there are always new dishes on offer.

There is one particular location of theirs however that I find myself returning to time and time again, not because of the food - which is pretty much the same at any of their branches, like with any chain. There is just something  peaceful about the food area on the top floor of the new extension at Burjuman. It might be all the water or the glass and wood roof or it might have something to do with the chilled out vibe of the area. It's a nice and welcome change from then the masses of crowds you get at MOE & Dubai Mall.  If you haven't seen it, you really should check it out - there are plenty of restaurants there to choose from if you aren't in the mood for oriental food.
